FAQ

Do I have to know a lot about X-Men/the Marvel Universe to play in this game?
If it's something you can't glean from reading the game info, then you probably don't need to know it. :Db If we've overestimated how easy this is to understand with no X-Men/Marvel knowledge, though, and there's something that's still baffling you? Go ahead and ask. We don't bite.

How many characters can I have?
Nine! Nine per player. They can even all be from the same series if you want, though we'd rather you didn't do that.

Is there a game chat?
Indeed there is. If you're on AIM, you can head over to xichat mutantparty (it's normally xichat, but AIM has a tendency to randomly stop our rooms from working for a week or two and when this happens we usually lurk in mutanthighschool or makeoutrp or mutantparty where we currently are!) and we will welcome you with open arms. Chat participation isn't essential but it's worth it if you like that sort of thing – a lot of folks like getting to know their fellow players, and it can be a good place to ask for threads and talk about plot. There's often a mod or two or three in there, too, who will a) happily help you out if you need any help with anything and b) kick your ass if you link to anything not worksafe without warning. See the rules for more on chatiquette.

I don't have AIM but I want to participate in the chat; what can I do?
Well, for starters you could get AIM or one of the many other clients that support it; if you don't want to download anything you can try meebo, which allows you to use AIM in a browser window. Handy!

Can I join chat if I'm not in the game already?
If you're planning on joining, or if you're thinking about it and want to see what we're like, feel free to pop in! You can also pose questions to [livejournal.com profile] mutantprom before actually joining.

What's with the whole MUTANT PROM thing?
MUTANT HIGH SCHOOL. MUTANT FIELD DAY. MUTANT PROM!!!

What's all this GMT stuff?
Like half the mods are British, so we live in Britishtime. It's this bad habit we have. For your reference, EST is GMT-5. Now you know!

So I heard you have a wiki.
We do. You can find it at xiwiki.pbworks.com, and it can be a bit intimidating, but your best first stop is the Newbie Guide to XIWiki. It contains a lot of useful information like the lists of staff and classes at the Xavier Institute, which we encourage players to help keep updated, as well as pages on NPCs, locations, and an asspile of injokes. Also more lists than is probably reasonable, although some of them are quite useful.

So does the game take place in the Marvel Universe?
This RP takes place in an AU which resembles Earth-616, the main Marvel Universe, in a lot of ways, but differs quite dramatically in others, in order to have the game work the way we want it to. Essentially, outside of the X-Men, all American superhero activity has been simplified: the Avengers, for instance, were established about two years ago and their roster is still Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man, the Wasp and Captain America; the Fantastic Four have been around for as long as the X-Men but their exploits have been toned down somewhat. Spider-Man has only been headline news in the Daily Bugle for the last two years.
The X-Men have had a variety of adventures and a variety of different teams; the original team of five young mutants was assembled ten years ago and it has gone through a lot of different members and a lot of different adventures since then. For a better idea of in-game history, check the timeline.

So what are those adventures?
We like to try to keep it vague and simple for the sake of people who want to app staff characters who've been members of the X-Men in the past. If you are playing a character who used to be a member of the X-Men, feel free to decide on past adventures amongst yourself with other players. Or just make shit up on the fly, especially if it's Silver Age-style nonsense. Especially especially if you're playing Wolverine.

If it's not Earth-616, what is it?
Earth-21561926, of course.

Are there any other mutant schools?
No. This is the only one. :I

Has the Xavier Institute always been a school?
Until it was rebuilt in 2009, the mansion did not have classrooms, dormitories, or any other of the school facilities it now boasts. Although there were often youngsters in residence and they often received schooling whilst at the mansion, it was often directly from Xavier or older members of the X-Men; there were no teaching staff and there were never more than five or so students at any one time.

This is the way something is in Marvel canon so it should be this way in your game, too!
Nope. The game is AU. Yeah, we take a lot of our cues from Marvel canon, obviously, but if we say something is a certain way in the game then that is how it is, regardless of whether that contradicts canon. If you know more about Earth-616 than us? Great, good for you. This isn't Earth-616.

Can I break the fourth wall?
You can't have your character recognise another character from fiction, no.
Obviously your characters are going to want to reference things now and then. That's fine – as long as what they're referencing doesn't involve a character we already have in the game. If it's a canon so far unrepresented, though, go ahead – but be prepared to pretend it never happened if someone apps a character from that series. We advise the use of poorly-disguised analogues or parodies of real-life books, comics, TV shows or video games in situations where directly referencing the real thing would be problematic.

Also, bear in mind that in this universe you can actually buy comics about the more public heroes (notably the Fantastic Four and Avengers).

Obviously none of this applies if you are playing Deadpool.

Why the politics? Aren't you worried about being biased?
Politics are a fairly important part of some of this game's plot and background, and we want to keep things fairly realistic in that area. As such, no political party is being portrayed as the 'good guys'; they're politicians, none of them are lovely people, they all make mistakes, and their actions in no way reflect the mods' opinions of individual people's political views, which we recognise vary drastically from person to person regardless of political affiliation. In-game politics will almost exclusively deal with mutant rights, and, while this will inevitably mirror some real-life social issues, we're much more interested in criticising prejudice from all political positions than in lauding any political party as the unicorn-riding bringers of sparkles and gorgeousness.

I want my character to be attending a class that you haven't mentioned/isn't listed with a teacher, what do I do?
Just say they attend it. We won't mind.

How many classes should my character be taking?
Really? As many as you like. Eight is an okay number? It's okay if you have more or less or only name a few and assume they're in some others. We have a pretty lax approach to classes and won't actually care if you change your mind about which ones your character is in every other week.

How do they afford all this?
The combined power of Professor X himself being pretty well-off and the school having a number of wealthy benefactors pays for most of the running of the school, as well as the education of a lot of the students. Students with no source of income (unsurprisingly, we are up to our necks in orphans and kids whose families have abandoned them) are provided with a moderate weekly allowance.

The mansion's technology is unfeasibly advanced, how are you explaining that?
I ...

... The Danger Room is cool, okay. Do you want us to not have the Danger Room or something? Geez.

Does my character have to have a codename?
For the most part, the only characters who'll have codenames from the start will those with a past in superheroics. Students may well be assigned codenames later on, though, so you might want to start thinking about it.

Does my character have to be the same age as they are in canon?
Nope. Generally speaking it makes most sense to make a character who's canonically a teenager a student, or one who's canonically an adult a staff member, but really we don't mind if people want to do it the other way round now and then. If we don't think it works we'll tell you, but if you can give us a believable characterisation, go for it.

Can my character be the oldest/toughest/strongest/most powerful ...?
Probably not. For the most part our measuring-sticks are in-universe characters – either NPCs, or played by people we trust. For example, we will generally discourage people from making their character:
- Older than Wolverine.
- A better engineer than Tony Stark.
- A more powerful telepath than Emma Frost.
- Stronger than the Hulk.
- More physically capable without super-powers than Captain America.
- More intelligent than Reed Richards.
- A more powerful sorcerer than Albus Dumbledore.
There are a few reasons for these limitations but mostly it's to do with not wanting the masses of characters from over-the-top shonen manga series to distort the power levels of the universe where this is set, and not wanting some of the people in charge of the school to be outdone by uppity kids.

Depending on who the character is, they may be allowed to be as good as some of these guys, but not better.

I have a question that isn't answered here!
Leave a comment about it here and we'll get back to you as soon as we can – that way the answer will be there for other people to see. Alternatively, you can contact the mod email at xavierinstitutemods@gmail.com, or IM one of us individually. If you're uncertain at all about whether anything is allowed, we'd much rather you ask us than assume the answer is no!

Is 'able to play any instrument' an acceptable power-thing if it explains his ability to 'depict/decipher emotions through music'?

Just making sure this is okay before I go off with it~

So, not exactly a FAQ question, but this seemed like the best place to do this.

In the wiki, I've gone and accidentally added a student page to the classes folder I swear someone's messing with me, I wasn't anywhere near the classes folder when I started writing that up and can't move it out. Could I please request that it be deleted or gotten out of the classes folder? I'm really really sorry and promise I'll double, triple check this kind of thing from now on?

What's the policy on apping a dropped character? Do they just pick up where the former player's version dropped off, or somehow forget everything, or...?

That depends on the character and the circumstances of their departure, and on what you want to do with them. So far we haven't had any dramatic departures that would necessitate the new applicant assuming memory loss or resurrection from the dead or LMDs or Skrulls or cloning or anything, so you'd probably be best taking a look over the character's old threads and either:

- picking up where they left off and assuming they had to be somewhere else for a while, or
- asking their CR-mates to do you the favour of retconning their previous presence out of their characters' memories.

Either way would be fine. Which character are you thinking about?

I read through the FAQs and didn't see this.

Say you wanted to apply for a certain character [let's just say like... Sailor Moon] as a student, but said character, in their canon, already parades around as a superhero with a superteam by night. Would you include their exploits or just have them start off from the beginning?

OH GOD THIS IS SO LONG AND, UH, I'M PRETTY SURE IT'S ASSININE.
UM. SO. I am actually going to go place a reserve for a DIFFERENT character as soon as I finish this question, but the answer of this question answers if I'm apping another character from a completely different series, so.

Yes.

HI I'M A FAN OF THE AUTHORITY and I was wondering, since the characters I'm currently considering from that series are all escaped laboratory experiments, essentially, how they would be received. A-also, how lenient you guys would be with the whole HARDER/BETTER/FASTER/STRONGER thing since one of the characters I'm considering, Apollo, is essentially a human version of Superman, and another, Midnighter, is like Batman except with superspeed because he's got a computer in his head.

...I'm pretty sure that all made no sense. Uh. Okay, break down of questions:

1) Jack Hawksmoor. Was experimented on by aliens from the age of 15 to 22 or so. Does not age normally. Talks to/symbiotes with urban structures (cities, towns, anywhere where people live for a long time). I will assume the manipulation of his genome constitutes mutation; am I safe in this assumption? Would an aged-down version of him work in this AU?

2) Midnighter. Went through some pretty extensive modifications that make him capable of reading opponents to the point of being able to predict the outcome of almost every fight in his favor. Computer in his brain. Is he acceptable at all?

3) Apollo. Went through some pretty extensive modifications that allow him to absorb sunlight as energy, ie Superman and such. It's never classified whether these modifications are genetic (and therefor mutations) or technological. There are youth versions of him and Midnighter; would either of them be acceptable?

TL;DR, I LIKE SHOVING DC INTO MARVEL TO FUCK WITH PEOPLE.

/puts on mod hat
Basically any character is acceptable as long as you're not apping a mass murderer as a teacher or something; having been experimented on is legit generally speaking (less so for students than adults, but still legit), but generally our approach to hecka overpowered characters is just ... power them down some, especially if they're going to be a student.

We don't actually mind what the source/s of the character's powers are in canon. It's an AU, so it's pretty easy to just pare powers down and attribute them to mutations, regardless of canon. For instance! I play Power Girl here, and in canon she has like a billionty one powers and is from space and shit, but to make things less complicated and her less overpowered, in XIverse she's a mutant instead of an alien and she's only a Flying Brick instead of having eye lasers and ice breath and super speed &c. &c. &c. as well – it makes my life like eight times easier.

If you really want to keep the experimentation in their backgrounds, we're not going to stop you, but if you're concerned about them, it'd be the work of like three seconds to make Apollo's sunlight-absorbing thing, for example, a mutant power instead of the result of being experimented on. But, yeah, if you do feel they're on the overpowered side we would recommend toning their powers down the same way we'd recommend it for the average over-the-top shounen manga hero.

IDIOTIC QUESTION ALERT
Can you tone a character down too much :Da

I ask because I took the nerf bat to my character and beat him up good with it, but considering his canon and how much "kicks your ass" is a pertinent part if not the dominant part of his profile, I wonder if changing it too far in the other direction would render him unrecognizable to modlies and thus lead to rejected app, which would be sad.

TL;DR first sentence :B

Re: IDIOTIC QUESTION ALERT
Well, we do look on nerf-bat assault as favourable, mostly. I mean, generally speaking "but _____ wouldn't be ____ without the ability to ____!" is a good justification for keeping a power, but if it's "___ wouldn't be ___ without the ability to BEAT EVERYONE" then that is a sacrifice we are willing to make.

HI IT'S ME AGAIN

No I'm not asking if you got my app ffff for once. I actually had a suggestion for the game. Because since pieces of Eric's backstory are canon, what about having a Gossip Girl-type thing in XI? It could be that there is one in other parts of New York (UES) and some anonymous NPC (or we could have a student take credit for it, whatever works) posting these ridiculous rumors to the network. They could have a cellphone hotline where people could send it tips (OOC or IC-ly, anything they want about their characters to be published and conversely, anything they want specifically NOT to be published) and it could lead to DRAMAZ and awesome.

And the rumors can be ridiulous. Something like:

Rumor has it that T and S are just a little too close to be friends. Proof? Send it in.

(T being Tony and S being Steve)

Also I even thought of an idea for the journal/thing name:

MUTANT GOSSIP. Like Mutant Prom. But better.

Hey! I'm thinking about apping Rebecca Chambers here, but I've noticed you include the Raccoon City incident in the XI timeline as having occurred in '98. Since it's currently '09 in XI-verse, Rebecca has no canon appearances after the end of the first Resident Evil, and I'd really prefer to play her as a student, would it be okay for me to work some kind of time travel/scientific stasis into her AU backstory so she could still be eighteenish and retain her personality in '09?

Yet another question, complete with tl;dr, for which I apologize in advance!

I'm thinking of apping a grumpy old BAMF from Tom Clancy universe, possibly as some sort of teacher... I've got a rough idea of his AU background, but basically as a "splinter cell" agent, he didn't exist during missions, changed many world events having to do with "information warfare" and things. He accomplishes all this while being part of a team, being the man of action while the rest of his team does support. He has all sorts of IT-based skills, as well as knowing Krav Maga from his years in the SEALS, and is generally a pretty awesome dude.

I was wondering if there would be any way to figure out how to streamline these events into XI-style events... the only problem being I don't know the X-men side of Marvel, and have no idea how going from his outfit, Third Echelon, to a position with Xavier might have worked. I do have a few thoughts, but being a total n00b, I don't know how valid they are!

Thanks in advance~

I know apps don't reopen until the 21st of April, but I'd like to get mine done well ahead of time.
Okay, FAQ and previous questions here didn't cover this -

What kind of educational credit does this school offer, exactly? I ask because the guy I'm considering applying for here is implied by canon (it's never said outright, but Arnaud's the kind to dance around this stuff and if you translate from "twitchy wizard with an ego the size of Texas" to English he really does admit it) to have been forced to leave school due to lack of funds before he could finish his degree - he's ridiculously bright and had been taking only higher-level courses, at some age under 17. (Planning on handwaving that as his and his advisor's way of making the best of what scholarship money he had and making the real reason he had to leave something to do with the fact that OH HI, AIR FORCE ROTC DOESN'T LIKE IT WHEN THEY FIND OUT YOU'VE BEEN USING MUTANT REFLEXES TO DO BETTER THAN THE REST OF YOUR CLASS.*)

Given that AP courses in actual schools are, if you get (depending on the school) anywhere above a flat 3 on the exam, considered valid college credit... will he be able to take all the boring basic English and mathematics courses that he'd need to finish out a college degree?

*Also is a DADT parallel re: being a mutant extant/okay with you guys or not? I might have to shift some stuff around in his backstory depending on the answer.

Can powers that are speculated and technically possible in and due to canon be applied for in XI?

This character here is the clone of his canon's main villain (M.Bison) and thus should be able to manipulate energy (Psycho Power) as M.Bison and Seth, another M.Bison clone, but it's never shown in canon.

Since this is an AU, I was wondering if I could add powers that are feasible due to his origins, of if I should stick with canon as strictly as possible.

How exactly do mutant kids without guardians become students? Do they just sign up somewhere? Schedule a meeting with Xavier?

AND

Would the Institute then have legal guardianship over them?

How they become students is kinda PLOTWISE up to you. Some people hitch-hike their way to the institute and just turn up, some people are brought in by xavier -- we also threw up sanctuary for this purpose so say if something traumatic and mutant related happened when someone's powers manifested, you can say sanctuary SWOOPED IN and cleared up the mess and took them to the institute.

AND yes pretty much. Unless you... do not want them to idk somehow

Soooo. Question.

Say if a character has an ability where they are able to effect the emotions of people through writing, would the network have a block against that, or would they still be able to effect the way people feel just by writing a text post on the network?

I'd think that there would be some sort of advanced block on the network for this, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. |D;

... I... am trying to wrap my brain around how this works. I THINK I'd need to read more about the power and understand it better before I leaned either way?
