GAME UPDATE: Sunday January 31st 2010
NEWS:
The U.S. Congress and White House declare a state of emergency on Monday in response to Magneto's takeover of Genosha and issues a bill, proposed by Senator James Baelheit, detaining anyone of mutant status, citizen or international, from leaving the country. It is effective immediately. In a press release on Tuesday, the reason for this action is cited as originating from concerns about Genosha's numbers rising and posing an increased threat. All international airports in the US have been equipped with x-gene testing devices to enforce this. Reactions range from approval to disgust, and run strong on either extreme.

The United Nations holds several debates focusing on the tragedy in Genosha. The UN's official stance is to allow Magneto's governership of Genosha in order to limit further loss of life; however, internal sources say they are divided on this issue, with a minority of representatives calling for a UN-sanctioned occupation. Peace talks are attempted, and diplomats with the X-gene are sent to confirm his policies. Magneto explains his stance and reiterates his invitation to mutantkind, but refuses to comply with any of the UN's suggestions. Two of the diplomats' retinue choose to stay behind on Magneto's invitation.

⊗ The right-wing media conglomerate Red Lamp Productions hosts a week-long donation telethon for the displaced human survivors of the explosion in Genosha. CEO Charles Lamperouge states in a press conference on Monday, "This loss of life is tragic and regrettable. Our condolences go out to the refugees forced from their homes by Magneto and his fellow terrorists." Donations reach $160,000 by the end of the week.

⊗ Questions are also asked about the cities still under quarantine, but the government claims the situation is under control.

⊗ The newest superteam of New York has put out a recruitment call after gaining official status from the Mayor.

THE XAVIER INSTITUTE:
⊗ Doctor Helen Magnus, leader of a worldwide underground network known as Sanctuary for All, has come forward to Charles Xavier and suggested they work together. The two have set up connections so that Sanctuary can help mutants find their way to the institute. Sanctuary also underlines that its own doors are open to anyone who would like a place to stay.

⊗ The weather turns cold again, with a foot of snow accumulating on Monday.

⊗ A virus has found its way into the institute's network. It doesn't appear malicious, but has the irritating side effect of triggering 5 second long webcam posts when people are least expecting them. Rumors suggest it was started by our very own deletion-evading gossip girl in the hope of catching something good.

THE BROTHERHOOD OF MUTANTS:
⊗ Now that Magneto has established his take over of the ruined Genosha, the Brotherhood is to set about repairing the damage caused. Their main aims are to establish a clean water supply and find some sustainable food source for themselves and the inhabitants left. Other tasks include clearing away rubble and debris caused by the explosion and trying to free up the environment, as well are making suitable shelters that can withstand weather conditions and provide ample temporary living space.

WHAT WOLVERINE DID THIS WEEK:
Wolverine appeared on Top Gear for their 'Star in a reasonably priced car' segment, however between the ninja attack and his metal bones his lap was rubbish.

OOC NOTICES:
Sanctuary is now live! This area is intended to bridge the gap somewhat between independent characters and other areas of the game. Any questions, direct them towards Jack! Sanctuary is happy to help young mutants to the Institute (be it from their own homes or from Genosha) or just take them in themselves. It's also willing to work with trusted independent characters (pretty much just ping us and you can become trusted through some plot device) on things. Basically, Sanctuary is there to give you things to do while not being too plot heavy or tied down to classes and such! They also hunt monsters sometimes. It's all cool.
⊗ Guys, PLEASE REMEMBER TO REPLY TO YOUR ACCEPTANCE EMAIL WITH YOUR USERNAME. If you don't do it we can't do lovely things like put you on the taken list or give you a dorm.
⊗ As ever, this post is open for talking about what's going down for Xavier Institute classes, mentor group meetings, etc. We do encourage people to thread classes, mentor group activities, etc. where possible rather than just handwaving all of them, but if you don't want to do a thread or you want to plan something or wevs, this is the place!

EXCELSIOR!

MENTOR GROUP | SELF DEF CLASS
HI MENTOR GROUP. They need a movie night or something. What do you think? Or awkward party of some sort.

Self def guys, want a log or something? They can uuuh have a beginners class this week thats BEING OUTSIDE YOUR HEIGHT/WEIGHT LIMIT (catching up with advanced guys!) and advanced class can have DEALING WITH POWERS.

Re: MENTOR GROUP | SELF DEF CLASS
Movie night would be fun. And popcorn.

I'd like to log, especially if Derrick can movement match someone for confusing, fun times. Also, Derrick's on the tall and lanky side, so any shorter people can pair up with him.

MATHEMATICS
Okay so I changed my mind, sorry. :'|

Temeraire arrives back at the Institute over the weekend, and takes up a post teaching Mathematics. The class is held in one of the larger rooms, so Temeraire can grow to a size he feels is suitably 'adult' instead of his usual metre height. He teaches with a hardlight chalkboard-esque contraption that he can 'scratch' markings onto, and is generally thrilled about everything and entirely intent on Getting It Right.

I'm assuming Shikamaru is still teaching with him, and got him up to speed over the weekend?

Re: MATHEMATICS
OH CLAUDIA IS IN THIS CLASS!

She is really fucking good at math but she is really awful as a student because even though she likes Temeraire a lot and thinks it's AWESOME to be taught by a dragon she has very little respect for authority and sometimes she tries to backseat teach or point out that Tem could be doing something a better way.

/giant run-on sentence :/

Re: MATHEMATICS
YAY MATH!

Jack has been doing super-dee-dooper advanced math since he was THREE (or more like nine, but whatever), so he is bored with the class and is only there to watch for a reason to correct Temeraire and show him up. If he makes any mistakes, Jack is on him like a shark on a raw meat steak. But he is easy to embarrass/harass, so Temeraire shouldn't have any REAL problems.

He is also rather intimidated by being taught by a dragon. Eep.

Re: MATHEMATICS
Oh! Derrick's in this class. He's not going to be too fazed by a dragon teaching. (He might be more curious about the "chalkboard" Temeraire's using.) He does okay at math, siding on good or bad depending on how motivated he is to do the work. Most of the time he does.

Pop Culture and Fashion, Mentor Group
P.C. (oh the irony of that shorthand) MODDY GOT BORED so it's awesome old movie week, enjoy lots of debates about which crusty old classics are really over-rated and/or still bloody brilliant along with viewings of anything from Casablanca to Fifth Element (or XI-verse equivalents etc.). Occasional interjections of water pistols from the ceiling are to be expected.

Fashion is a study of the baroque period of dress and the Rococo stylings. Also comparisons to modern trends in Japan and gothic Lolita fashion- the practical homework is to design something decorative that is influenced by these styles, but which doesn't hamper physical movement and doesn't make you look like a giant doily.

Mentor Group is blissfully left alone because Mod can't be bothered with all this responsibility fandango. Lucky you.

LATIN CLASS
SO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO SHOW UP FOR THE FIRST LESSON OF THIS ~EXCITING NEW CLASS~ ... uuhhh

Grantaire shows up 10-15 minutes late and smelling of alcohol – it would have been worse, but he is Making An Effort. He talks at everybody who has showed up for the duration of the rest of the period without letting anybody get a word in edgeways or giving anybody's questions a straightforward answer. What he says could vaguely be construed as some kind of introduction to the subject, kind of? A BIT? Mostly the tone is lighthearted but he is dismissive and pessimistic about civilization in general and is rambly as fuck and goes on forever.

He does not set any homework.

ANY TAKERS.

Band?
So, I've heard a few people want music fun times/hijinks. Band class has been NPC (though Brook is still teaching it) and therefore not happening.

Is there enough interest for a band class log? I'll set it up, and the "lesson" can be a free study. Students bring their own piece to work on.

So. Band people! or people who'd want to pass by Who's interested? =D

HISTORY CLASS
I dunno how many logs there'll be in the future, but Robin's first history class is being logged here (http://community.livejournal.com/xi_rpg/384303.html). I also have a curse miniplot set up if you want to give your character some bad luck or something (hey, she gave you fair warning in the email!). I just thought that A)it would be a good embarrassing way for Robin to meet her students, and B)it would make history class more exciting. ^^ None of the curses are game altering, just goofy. XD
