GAME UPDATE: September 13th, 2009 (Sunday)

AT THE XAVIER INSTITUTE:
On Monday, after lessons, a post goes up on the school intranet announcing the introduction of mentor groups; several teachers will be given charge of four to six students each. The information is also pinned up in the dormitories and staff room, and each staff member to be given a team is given a list of their assigned students including their powers.

Staff are told to take whatever approach they feel appropriate with their group but advised to make time for a group meeting some time over the next week. Goofy group names are encouraged but not, at this stage, necessary.

NEWS:
ON TUESDAY:
A group of youths in costume, mostly mutants, attempt to foil a bank robbery in Florida but wind up causing a fire. Nobody is seriously injured, but, although the youngest vigilante is 21 and none of them are involved with the Institute, the early days of the X-Men are recalled by a few news reporters and some point accusatory fingers at Xavier. Senator Thompson reiterates his desire to implement a mutant registration program if he is elected President in November.
ON FRIDAY:
A twelve-storey robot operated by a scientist with a grudge attacks Manhattan, but with the Fantastic Four battling Skrulls in space and the Avengers on a mission to the Antarctic, who will stop its rampage?
More information on this will go up in-game when the time comes.

WHAT WOLVERINE DID THIS WEEK:
Goes to New Zealand to fight a giant mutated Kakapo created by the Green Man, a deranged environmentalist aiming to restore endangered species through genetic engineering. Where putting laser guns onto massive ground parrots factors into the conservation aspect of his plans is unclear, but Wolverine wins anyway.

OOC NOTICES:
If, during the upcoming in-game week (two IRL weeks), you want a lesson one of your characters is teaching to go a certain way, or if your teacher character plans to be doing something specific and unusual with the lesson, but you don't want to actually log the thing out (which is reasonable), this is where you say so. Drop a comment on this post, other people can reply, fun for everyone. If you've got a new teacher character (ie. if this is their first game update), it's probably a good idea to leave a comment here to give everyone an idea of what their first classes will be like.

If anyone has any issues with the group assignments please let the mods know!

Havoc's class starts off with the basics. Learning to concentrate, namely. The first class will consist of a single exercise, the one she used to gain control over her own abilities: Mentally blocking out the rest of the world entirely. No thinking about anything, not emotions, not your surroundings, just your ability and your teacher's instructions. Simple as that. Over the course of the week, of course, she's going to make concentration more and more difficult. Sometimes, she'll clear her throat, sometimes she'll turn a rusty valve, and sometimes she'll just flick spitballs at you. That's as extreme as it'll get for this week, but she'll escalate it at a steady pace over the course of the year, so that by the time she's done with you, you will have a full level of focus while in the balmy heat of a sub-tropical jungle, through the sounds of machine gun fire and the threat of killer bees, even if you don't think you need to.

Naturally, this method, though it should work for most (she'd have blown herself up years ago if it didn't), won't work for everyone, and she'll be able to tell who it works for and who it doesn't. If you fall into the latter category, say so, and you'll have a new IEP ready for next week, likely involving a one-on-one tutoring setup.

Anyone who didn't arrive in time for the ACE exam last week, you'll take it this week, as will be the case with any future arrivals.

Shikamaru takes that as an invite to sleep through class.

Alfred's main problem with his abilities is how natural for him it is: he really can't sense a significant difference between snapping a shin bone and ripping a piece of tissue paper. Until he learns to appreciate these differences this won't help all that much. :c Once he does figure this out, though, the concentration will help.

[identity profile] monarchs-voice.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
You know how police officers deal with unruly suspects, with the twisting the arm and all that? This is how Havoc deals with sleepers. This class is for your own good and you are going to take it seriously. >:|

[identity profile] hollow-metal.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
Alphonse accepts your challenge. :|

[identity profile] queenwitha-j.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
Shikamaru has enough control that if you walk into his shadow you will let go of his arm.

[identity profile] monarchs-voice.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
Does he have the class, though? If he passed the exam when he got here, he doesn't need it.

[identity profile] monarchs-voice.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
You're forgetting who knows exactly what you are capable of, Shika. It's her job to.

[identity profile] hollow-metal.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
He's taking it as a safety measure. JUST IN CASE. He was stuck inside his armor for a good 6 years and he's only recently gotten pulled out of it, and he's scared of it happening again. He's actually scared of a LOT of things when it comes to his power.

She can feel free to tell him to GTFO if she thinks he doesn't belong there. He'll pout at her, though.

[identity profile] monarchs-voice.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
That's part of the goal of the exercise. If he learns to focus on his strength, then he's at least expected to learn how to exert it at different levels, but if this will be a problem, one-on-one lessons can be arranged beginning next in-game week.

[identity profile] queenwitha-j.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
Then that just means he needs to be more clever about where his shadow is.

But seriously, Shikamaru's issues aren't about keeping his powers in check. They are about maintaining his powers in action for longer than a few minutes at a time. So the meditation thing will just be a waste of time and if that is all she has to offer he will calmly explain why he might as well just sleep through this class.

[personal profile] maiiau 2009-10-05 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I think the concentration will help, it's just since he's focusing on his strength it might get worse before it gets better. XD

[identity profile] monarchs-voice.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
She's basically to students what Christopher Walken is to acting roles: she's not going to turn anyone down. I just wanted to be sure we're on the same page. :)

[identity profile] hollow-metal.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
Ditto with Al. Only he's not so good with the actual firing of them. His hands were way too big to even hold one for a number of years XD but he can take them apart and clean them real well!

[identity profile] monarchs-voice.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
She'll point out that the exercise works both ways, and she quite carefully chose it for that reason. But, if he insists on sleeping, she'll kindly remind him that he can sleep in the Danger Room, and she'll be glad to set it to the "Savage Land" setting for him.

Anyway, from an ooc standpoint, the focus exercise is meant to be an all-purpose, hand-wavey excuse to keep the class going without having to log it out. If you want Shika in one-on-one sessions, that's cool, I just want all the bases covered first. :)

That, and he will need to put the effort in for at least the first week, which, by Havoc's definition, means "a week's worth of effort."

[identity profile] monarchs-voice.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
Possibly, but she'll probably see this particular exercise as suiting his needs better than almost anyone's, and she's concerned with the long run. Temporary one-on-one stint, perhaps?

[identity profile] phoneskillnoise.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I think we already talked about Neku being in your class.

I think he might be okay with this technique, although he might be one of the slower ones to get the hang of it.

[identity profile] phoneskillnoise.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
you'll probably notice that Neku's buildings have graffiti drawn on them as well

He doesn't say much, but you can tell he is enjoying the drawing in the class.

[identity profile] phoneskillnoise.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
Hahaha, that would be just his luck. Yes, let's make them partners.
fifty: (☆ in full glory reflected)

gasp I'm using the right journal

That would help at first, I think. :|b

[identity profile] hatsunemix.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, okay, Miku should be pretty good at that. :o

Also, while I'm thinking of it, private vocal lessons? :o

Mr H is not easily frustrated with INTJ types--and actually as an INFP himself, he's your personality type's theorized 'adviser'. :3

Since the personality test isn't graded (how could it be? NO U DID IT WRONG U GET BAD GRADE. XD) he won't mind the lack of showy work. He might approach Naoto after class to see why there's a question mark, however. Just to make sure nothing is confusing his students.

If she wants he could offer her more information on ENTJ types like possible career paths. With a reminder of course, that these are theorized and generalized and may not fit everyone perfectly.

[identity profile] sundaysiesta.livejournal.com 2009-10-05 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
yui's going to be pretty slow at this. sometimes she'll just daydreaming, and that'll be pretty obvious, as she'll start floating. otherwise, she'll be trying too hard to concentrate and not be able to clear her mind enough to actually concentrate.

she'll manage to hit the right amount of focus a few times, though, so she's not exactly a lost cause.
