GAME UPDATE: SEPTEMBER 20TH, 2009
AT THE XAVIER INSTITUTE:
Things proceed as usual. It rains a lot, on and off, in the first half of the week, but it gets drier around Thursday.

NEWS:
Pro-mutant lobbyists confront President Henderson about her lack of action on the mutant front despite her promises of mutant civil rights reform and ask if this approach will continue if she is elected for a second term.
New York Senator James Baelheit echoes these concerns from a different stance when he vocally pledges his support for Thompson, insisting that action needs to be taken to control "the mutant situation".

WHAT WOLVERINE DID THIS WEEK:
Teams up with John the Skrull to save some orphans from Madame Solution and the Chemical Boys.

OOC NOTICES:
FIRSTLY! New students will not have a mentor group yet. We know we made some noises to the effect that we'd be posting new assignments in this game update, but we kind of figured that wouldn't really work; instead, the new assignments will go up after the ACTIVITY CHECK WE SPRANG ON YOU TODAY is over, in about a week's time, to make sure we GET EVERYONE. PATIENCE PLEASE.

SECONDLY! We would like to remind everyone that we now have a wiki, which you are heartily encouraged to request access to and edit the heck out of.

As ever, we encourage people playing staff to start comment threads to this post about what's going down in classes this week to save on threading a million classes. Same goes for mentor group meetings, if you like! You are of course welcome to actually thread any classes or meetings you like, but a) this is still good for planning and b) most people do not want to thread every single lesson SO GO AHEAD AND SPAM THIS POST

International relations!
This week, being Enjolras's first, students are told that there's no need to take notes - their grades will be based on the quality and quantity of their participation in the class debates, not on written work.

The first topic of the week is to discuss Carl von Clauswitz's statement that 'war is the continuation of politics by other means.'

Enjolras sits back and listens to what the students have to say, occasionally stepping in to invite the quieter students to put forth their opinions...

Re: International relations!
Eli takes very good notes. He kind of dominates the class discussion. He believes that war should only be fought in the case of gross human rights violations, like WWII. He cites things like Darfur and Rwanda and probably gets in a heated debate at some point.

Starr seems to be listening more for the first class but occasionally adds her piece in support of other students' arguments.

Due to the potential passionate nature of this class, Starr might get headaches but she's pretty good at hiding her discomfort.

Ulquiorra presents the most bleak and negative viewpoint possible, yet it's well argued with historical evidence. He is not the first to speak up, nor is he the last. He is reasoably thorough.

It takes J about five minutes to realize he's so far out of his league he can't even see it anymore. He listens for about half the class, trying to catch up in some form, before speaking up: "Isn't fighting what you do when you run out of ideas?"

He might not last long or do too well, but he'll try.

Band
It probably would be a good idea to say that Brook made some attempt to warn people ahead of time, or at least entered the classroom on day one with some sort awareness of the delicacy of the situation. Unfortunately Brook's supply of good ideas is very, very limited, so instead you guys get a very tall very dead elderly gentleman who is completely (and perhaps a bit eerily) oblivious to whether or not he is freaking people out. HELLO AND GOOD MORNING EVERYONE and he has no problem addressing anyone hiding behind their desks as though this is a completely normal way of doing things. He goes from proper to leaning back in his chair with his feet on his desk in about point oh two five seconds.

The first day of class is spent getting people's names (which he is not always that good at remembering) and musical preferences (which he remembers every time). Students are invited to recommend their favorite artists/songs or bring in copies at any point during the year, as well as sign a sheet to request an instrument from school storage if they haven't brought one from home or would like to try something new.

There are really only three rules in his classroom. One: There will be no rude comments about anyone else's taste in music, as everyone will get a turn when it comes to what they learn to play later on. Two: Do not play rough with the instruments. Yes, they are replaceable. No, that does not make it okay to be careless with them. Three: No one looks down on the inexperienced. No one. Four: HAVE FUN~ what do you mean he said there were only three

The rest of the week is spent getting everyone on the same page with the basics: learning to read musical notation, mostly, which can get pretty involved when it's the stepping stone to the entire rest of the class. Students that know this stuff already are not required to even show up during basics week, and there won't be any homework for anyone EVER.

This week's average daily puns-per-class: 112

Demyx will try any instrument you choose to throw at him and might ask to try various things he hasn't had a chance to before. And this is the only class where he'll volunteer to help out.

Physics
First, let it be known the the Doctor is wearing his ridiculous, twelve-foot long, multi-colored scarf. Let it also be known that he spent about five minutes playing wit a yo-yo before realizing that he actually had to teach. Whoops. And finally, the Doctor didn't tell anybody how ridiculous he looks because frankly, he thinks he looks just fine, it's you lot who are ridiculous. So yes. Physics.

The first part of the class is learning everybody's names. He promptly forgets some of them and calls the students what comes into his mind. Expect one of you to be dubbed 'what's his name' and another 'you in the hat'. Sorry.

As for actual teaching, today is just making sure that everybody knows the SI system of measuring. No feet and pounds here, we're using meters and kilograms. Expect a worksheet on the SI units to do in class, with finishing the worksheet for homework. Any attempts to get the Doctor to talk about himself will definitely be rewarded with cryptic comments and a reminder to get back to your work.

After this one class Fletcher is going to decide the Doctor is nuts and withdraw from the class in favor of Storm's more age-appropriate curriculum.

Storm plays getting to know you games with the kiddies, and gives them math boxes and worksheets and has them write a little something to determine where they're at. Basically she is going to try and figure out what to teach each person since there are like five of them and they're all different ages.

If you are a lightning/cloud/wind type person reply here and we can figure out what we are doing there.

Emma has them finishing up Born Normal and starting work on their personal narratives, which are basically about being mutants and dealing with their powers and stuff.

ESL kids get current events. They have to write a summary of an article in English. The article needs to be submitted along with the paper.

Advanced Telepathy does danger room sessions practicing mind control. If any kind soul wants to volunteer for mind control practice sessions, I'd really appreciate it.

Rogue decides on The Importance of Being Earnest. Expect to see sign up sheets soon.

In null class they go for ice cream and talk about how not to hate their powers. Afterwards they practice sneaking up on each other. She gives them all gloves.

Minato will submit a paper on the giant robot (assuming it's been on the news already). It will be well-written with only a few errors in English.

Mia's Driver's Ed class
Nobody gets behind the wheel of a car this week. The perky swordswoman spends the week explaining the good aspects of Driver's safety, gets to know her students, and tells her students that this class will be fun and exciting. She would like to know any special needs you might need for practice driving like if you need a car a built less like a car and more like a tank due to super strength or what have you.

Trust me, it'll only be boring this week.

Re: Mia's Driver's Ed class
Harry sits diligently, enduring the boredom for the promise of the sweet sweet freedom a car brings. He took driver's ed in high school but never got a chance to finish, so he's probably reasonably aware of the basics.

He also wonders if it would be possible for him to work in an older model car, seeing how modern technology has a tendency to break down around him unless very specially calibrated.

FRENCH
The first half hour of the lesson is an assessment to see just how much French people know already. This involves introducing yourselves (as much in French as you can).

Those who are better at French are then made to write short speeches describing their mutant powers and are asked to present it to the rest of the class. While they are writing those, Enjolras teaches the less-proficient some basic verbs.

It's all rather basic, but next lesson there will be FRENCH LITERATURE (and definitely no Victor Hugo >> ).

Re: FRENCH
Axel's mother is French and works as a translator in an embassy so he's pretty much fluent in it and is only taking the class as something easy for him to do. He wouldn't need to write a short speech on his mutant powers, so he wont, but will just describe them as if he was speaking English. :D

Anatomy

Uhhh. Papers aren't due until, Friday, or something. I don't even freaking know. Basically Tsunade was probably rambling on about something dealing with the skeletal system as it's the base of the whole body in the first place. Expect boring lectures.

First Aid

You guys will partner up!~ And by partner up I mean testing out first aid things in class. And by testing out things in first aid I mean actually reading to each other and practicing once Tsunade has deemed you fit enough to not accidentally strangle or poison your partner.

Mentor group

Eh. If they met. It was probably Tsunade getting them to fetch her some sake or something and then just sitting back and letting them chat. Also. Names. You jerks get to pick out a name amongst yourselves.

Earth Science: Not much to this lesson. We study different types of rocks and your asked to start a rock collection.

Combat: Toph blindfolds 1/2 the class and starts a game of tag. No peeking or you have to run laps with rocks tied to your feet. If you "tag" a person that person gets blindfolded.

ART
Okay Mr H is going to be nice and trust them not to explode everything. We'll be doing clay pots. Mr H will be teaching how to wedge clay, and the pinching method for making clay pots.

Also, there'll be some grizzly bears wandering about this week, but no worries, they're only two feet tall. They'll offer their claws to hold things and cut up the clay.

PSYCHOLOGY
Pop quiz time! On Wednesday they'll have a pop quiz, on the things they've discussed about personality theories. This week they'll be discussing divergence from normal behavior and disorders. Mainly how that 'disorders' are mostly naturally occurring behaviors that everyone has, it's only when the behavior disrupts the person's life so much that they cannot live a normal life anymore does it become a 'disorder'.

You'll probably end up with him giving a rant at least once on how 'utterly stupid and retarded' most psychologists are. Throughout his rant, any notes on the board will take their chances escaping once again. Some might end up in some of the students' hair.

MENTOR GROUP
Uh. Mr H will probably take them out to dinner sometime this week. Do you guys want to thread this, or will any of them even show up?

Starr (Psychology)- She's new, so I'm not sure if you're going to have her quiz or not. She pays attention and takes good notes. An 'R' gets tangled in her hair but she manages to get it out by the end of class.

GEOGRAPHY
Pietro has continued holding class outside despite the bad weather. It's how stuff's done back in Transia, so suck it up kids. They're currently studying the tri-state area and the influence of mass transit on its development.

Also, there were papers due on your favorite of NYC's five boroughs on Thursday. They were graded at superspeed and immediately handed back. Feel free to cry about your results.

There's a quiz on everything next week. If the majority of the class does well, he's considering a field trip to the NYC transit museum. This has been vaguely alluded to as something "far more interesting than the bloody woods", but very few specifics were mentioned.

CRIMINAL LAW
Hey kids, remember those cases given to you last week? Yeah. They'll be discussed at length and you'll be graded for those. Don't worry if you haven't quite solved it or didn't solve it like the actual case, you'll still get plenty of points for creativity and such alone. Also this week Dick proposes you bring along newspaper articles of ongoing cases you'd like to discuss or speculate on with your fellow classmates. There will be hot drinks and cookies during these discussions, like a crime-solving tea party.

SELF-DEFENSE
Finally moving on to the actual combat stuff here. Still just basic moves, mind you. But yeah, this week's lessons will have some ACTION. Better be ready to work up a sweat.

Alfred probably managed to solve it with Virgil, though not necessarily as efficiently as it was actually done. He will be happy to bring in a bunch of articles and will get rather excited in all the discussions and might take them over if allowed to (though considering Naoto's in this class they might be short discussions). Also omnomnom delicious cookies.

SELF-DEFENSE

FIREARMS for the badasses
Fuck yeah, shooting random shit. It starts now. Basically, just... we're shooting stuff. Accuracy is important, guys.

ENGLISH for the freshmen and sophomores
Guess what book we're starting, kiddos! Yeah, that's right: The Scarlet Pimpernel. The book will be assigned Monday, with reading (the first nine chapters) that will be due on Wednesday; a pop quiz will be handed out first thing Wednesday morning, and while it won't be hard, it certainly won't be easy. The next bit of reading (chapters ten through nineteen) follows the same pattern, being assigned Wednesday night and due Friday. And yes, kids... that means that there is another quiz. :D

Be prepared to discuss Sir Percy's badass plots, just so she knows that you students are keeping up with the reading. She'll also go over just a bit of the French Revolution, just to give you some background on, you know... what the book is centered around. No, this isn't history class, but you guys might want to know about all that fun stuff.

Also, Yoko is sure to remind you all that your behavior this week determines whether or not y'all will get to watch the amazing movie at a later point in time. Trust me, guys... you don't want to miss it. Sink me!

Hakkai informs the class that the first day of class is just to get to know each other and what powers everyone has. The rest of the week is going to just be teaching how to meditate. Such as the clearing of the mind and complete relaxation.

Telepathy and Empathy
Class this week will be about trying to understand what everyone's power means to them individually. She will be meeting with everyone one on one and asking them exactly how it is that their powers make them feel and if they feel like they can explain what it is they do. They aren't graded on their response, but they are going to be graded on being there.

While she is meeting with everyone individually, everyone else can do as they like, either catch up on other homework, or read, or sleep whatever. Just be sure to show up. :D
