GAME UPDATE: October 4th, 2009
AT THE XAVIER INSTITUTE:
Professor Xavier takes off for most of this week on important Xavier business, leaving Emma Frost, as deputy headmistress, in charge.

Students are now capable of getting their hands on official Xavier Institute hoodies and t-shirts, if that is the sort of thing that interests them.

While there is no official word on mentor group competition as of yet, a scoreboard has definitely been put up in the staff room, and so far not very many groups have any points. Some teachers may want to do something about this.

The rain from last week persists until Wednesday, following which the rest of the week is dry.

NEWS:
The second presidential debate, which focuses mainly on something boring idk, is aired on Tuesday. Mutants are brought up only briefly towards the beginning of the debate, when Thompson lists Henderson's failure to do anything to address the 'Mutant problem' along with other broken promises. Henderson holds her own in the face of this and is widely considered to have won the debate, although there are plenty of people willing to argue the contrary.

A local news station runs a feature on the construction project that Holly J Sinclair organized a couple of weeks ago – the tone of the reporting is very positive, although they don't interview any of the students – or the Institute's staff – and the members of the public who they do interview seem a little unnerved by having had a group of mutants doing construction work in their neighbourhood.

WHAT WOLVERINE DID THIS WEEK:
This week Wolverine takes on the Crocazons, who are trying to use their Reptile Bazookas to demolish Los Angeles.

OOC NOTICES:
Since folks have been overwhelmingly in favour of it, we're going to go ahead and allow first-person action logs in [livejournal.com profile] xi_rpg to try to cut down on the amount of handwaving we wind up doing on big group threads. Third-person logs are still permitted and encouraged! The rules have been updated accordingly.

• Apps open again on Wednesday! While we're not banning staff characters who don't meet the suggestions on the applications page, we'd definitely advise anyone planning to app a staff character to give them a good reason for being at the school. We'd also like to remind you that we're absolutely okay with characters who won't be actually at the school at all, if you feel like you can make that work! Feel free to talk to us about that.

• On that note, we'd like to know who would, hypothetically, be interested in apping villain characters (or even envillaining characters they already play). If this is something you'd definitely consider, drop an email to the mods at xavierinstitutemods@gmail.com.

• As ever, we encourage people playing staff to start comment threads to this post about what's going down in classes this week to save on threading a million classes. Same goes for mentor group meetings, if you like! You are of course welcome to actually thread any classes or meetings you like, but a) this is still good for planning and b) most people do not want to thread every single lesson, so go ahead and spam this post with that stuff!

Band; Mentor Group
The third week of band class begins amidst rumors that Brook totally hit on Tsunade and that's why the staff room is getting a new door.

Er, anyway - now that class has spent time going over learning to read music without the distraction of instruments, and then spent time learning WITH the distraction of instruments (but in the silliest possible way)...now that that's out of the way, Brook announces that Play Badly Week is over. This does not mean it is Play Well Week, as there is no such thing. There are only weeks in which playing badly is mandatory, and weeks in which playing badly is optional. Students are free to randomly declare Play Badly Time for themselves at any moment for any length of time, and he sees no reason why they should have to ask permission first when the answer will always be "yes" anyway. Brook will be Playing Badly himself once in a while completely at random and without warning, just to set an example. (What kind of example this is, we're not sure.)

When it comes time to pass out sheet music, those expecting more of the simple silly options from last week are in for a surprise: it's Eric Clapton's "Layla (Unplugged)" and it's been rewritten to include parts for every instrument in the class. By some miracle this actually sounds good. Have fun messing around with it, kids, although Brook will of course continue helping out and giving advice as necessary, particularly to those still getting used to reading music.

Towards the end of class on Tuesday (he was going to do it Monday but forgot) (this is okay because he probably thinks it's still Monday anyway) Brook announces that he will in fact be giving several million points of extra credit to anyone participating in Miss Vanderhall's benefit show project, which he will also be assisting. Giselle can give the class any further details she likes about what's needed. GOODNESS HE IS SO PROUD OF YOU YOUNG PEOPLE.

This week's average daily puns-per-class: 105

***

As for mentor group...the general chat-time last time around having settled on musical movie night for their running project, that's what they'll do. In the interests of at least two muns being kinda zombie at the moment it might be best to hold off on the Nightmare Before Christmas log until a bit closer to in-game Halloween. So. What should they watch first? (Additionally Brook is not really down with this whole "mentor group competition" thing. If the kids REALLY want to he'll go along with it, but as far as he's concerned that doesn't sound like much fun at all.)

Rumor
This is of course, completely true. :| Though Tsunade is not going to confirm this.

Rumor
Brook won't be confirming it either, although this is less intentional and more because he is completely oblivious as to what actually happened. As far as he recalls they had a perfectly civil conversation and she's a very nice young woman who he hopes has an excellent year.*

*Trust me, folks. Tsunade was right to do what she did.

Expect Brook to receive a warning about sexual harassment. If this persists, Emma's going to have to have a meeting.

Aww, Giselle appreciates Brook's support. She's also glad that it is no longer mandatory to play badly, because the harp sounds so much prettier when it's played properly.

He thinks it sounds very nice when played badly too, but of course everyone is welcome to their opinion and you should probably not listen to anything Brook says anyway. Ever.

Re: Band; Mentor Group
Spin is a bit relieved that his eardrums can rest a little, and is actually kind of excited about the new music. He's slowly starting to get the hang of all this, definitely still uncertain but not asking for quite as much help as before.

He's also plenty willing to help out with Giselle's show, though definitely not performing unless someone else wrangles him into it.

For mentor group, Spin is extremely relieved that Brook isn't getting caught up in the whole competition thing. Sitting back and watching some fun movies is much more enjoyable.

Re: Band; Mentor Group
You better believe the improvement is noticed, if not commented upon. Brook is furthermore delighted to see (despite his lack of eyes you know) that Spin has been kidnapped into Giselle's project, and is quite sure that the flailing and nervousness will be character-building in some way. J might (ie, will) get an extra half-million points for this. Don't worry, Spin, WE'VE GOT YOUR BACK.*

*You should probably worry.

Movies are indeed infinitely superior to competition, and so everyone else can look forward to this mentor group remaining at zero on the scoreboard for the entire year. Take pride in it, children! Take pride in it. |D

Re: Band; Mentor Group
J is absolutely on cloud nine. They're playing Clapton and he is in line for several million extra credit points...but mostly because they're playing Clapton. Nobody will ever be able to convince him Brook is not the coolest teacher ever.

I personally am claiming zombie for this week, so IDK if I'll be able to thread anything |D Rest assured, when it comes to picking this week's feature, if it came out on Broadway after Anything Goes or Oklahoma! and has a movie version, J probably owns it. He's also got quite a bit of Fred Astaire. The guy is determined to get everyone an education in the wonder that is Broadway.

Re: Band; Mentor Group
It should probably be noted that when it comes to Fred Astaire or assorted old musicals like the ones above, Brook suddenly knows exactly what J is talking about already and can fangirl about it like a master. He saw a good few of them when they were first released in theaters or performed on stage...in the 1930s/40s/50s, and there will no doubt be an occasional comment to this effect. If any of the mentor group kids ever doubted that Brook was old, well there you go. 8D

Starr is glad play badly week is over...but kind of cringes at the idea of it coming back.

She's still learning how to read music but is quickly getting the hang of it.

As for mentor group stuff, Starr suggests their first movie be Hairspray or Chicago or even Sound of Music...because she really likes those musicals.

Re: Band; Mentor Group
You better believe it'll be back. When you least expect it, young lady, it'll be back.

Brook totally saw Sound of Music on Broadway...in 1959. 8D He never saw the film version but he's heard it's quite lengthy; they can still add it to the movie night planning somewhere, although depending on everyone's schedule may have to watch it in halves on two seperate days. He's completely unhip when it comes to Hairspray but happily adds it to the options anyway. There will be vote on all this, perhaps. (Brook won't be voting at all, probably because he seems to like everything.)

Re: Mentor Group
J will vote for Chicago. If they wind up watching it, expect an enthused lecture at the beginning about the life and times and choreography of Bob Fosse, because Fosse did Chicago and Fosse was awesome.

Yeah, J's none too stellar in school, but he is just a font of knowledge when it comes to Broadway. |D

Rofl. I'm not even sure what instrument Rin has, still.

But she'd be quite interested in this benefit show thing, of course!~ It's performing and that's something she's all over.

She doesn't have to pick one for the rest of the year, if it helps. Changing your decision at random is perfectly allowable in this classroom! In fact, it is possibly encouraged.

Several million points shall be awarded, then. Not that anyone's really going to need them.

Mio will be rather ecstatic to be playing Clapton. It's one of those songs she learned back in the day so she'll be all happy and on Cloud 9-like.

And then will flail and internally go DDDDDDDDD8 about the benefit show because 'aaaah points' and 'aaaaaa getting on stage again, asaskajasd' thinking is colliding and someone needs to con convince her to sing/perform with Yui/without 'her' band/whatever

/hopes that made sense;;

Several million point? Yousuke can't believe his ears.

Since mandatory Play Badly is over, Yousuke goes all-out on Play Well. The song is... not his favorite but damn it all might as well do your best anyway!

Also, he might be trying his best to crack horrible jokes in class this week, quite possibly with the assistance of Ms. Wildman.

Len sort of sad Play Badly week is over, he found it amusing--but he rather likes being able to play a song with other people instead of just make random noise.

Also, Len's already performing with Rin, of course, so yay points~
