GAME UPDATE: October 4th, 2009
AT THE XAVIER INSTITUTE:
Professor Xavier takes off for most of this week on important Xavier business, leaving Emma Frost, as deputy headmistress, in charge.

Students are now capable of getting their hands on official Xavier Institute hoodies and t-shirts, if that is the sort of thing that interests them.

While there is no official word on mentor group competition as of yet, a scoreboard has definitely been put up in the staff room, and so far not very many groups have any points. Some teachers may want to do something about this.

The rain from last week persists until Wednesday, following which the rest of the week is dry.

NEWS:
The second presidential debate, which focuses mainly on something boring idk, is aired on Tuesday. Mutants are brought up only briefly towards the beginning of the debate, when Thompson lists Henderson's failure to do anything to address the 'Mutant problem' along with other broken promises. Henderson holds her own in the face of this and is widely considered to have won the debate, although there are plenty of people willing to argue the contrary.

A local news station runs a feature on the construction project that Holly J Sinclair organized a couple of weeks ago – the tone of the reporting is very positive, although they don't interview any of the students – or the Institute's staff – and the members of the public who they do interview seem a little unnerved by having had a group of mutants doing construction work in their neighbourhood.

WHAT WOLVERINE DID THIS WEEK:
This week Wolverine takes on the Crocazons, who are trying to use their Reptile Bazookas to demolish Los Angeles.

OOC NOTICES:
Since folks have been overwhelmingly in favour of it, we're going to go ahead and allow first-person action logs in [livejournal.com profile] xi_rpg to try to cut down on the amount of handwaving we wind up doing on big group threads. Third-person logs are still permitted and encouraged! The rules have been updated accordingly.

• Apps open again on Wednesday! While we're not banning staff characters who don't meet the suggestions on the applications page, we'd definitely advise anyone planning to app a staff character to give them a good reason for being at the school. We'd also like to remind you that we're absolutely okay with characters who won't be actually at the school at all, if you feel like you can make that work! Feel free to talk to us about that.

• On that note, we'd like to know who would, hypothetically, be interested in apping villain characters (or even envillaining characters they already play). If this is something you'd definitely consider, drop an email to the mods at xavierinstitutemods@gmail.com.

• As ever, we encourage people playing staff to start comment threads to this post about what's going down in classes this week to save on threading a million classes. Same goes for mentor group meetings, if you like! You are of course welcome to actually thread any classes or meetings you like, but a) this is still good for planning and b) most people do not want to thread every single lesson, so go ahead and spam this post with that stuff!

Earth Science, Combat, Mentor Group
Earth Science: Rock Collections are due at the end of the week. They need to be labeled by name, characteristic, and where they are generally found (if you just say "Found in the Dirt" you will find your rock collection buried under ground and are required to dig it up with a shovel.

Anyway, we're now moving on to earthquakes and volcanoes this week. So lava and tectonic plates are our theme. And that means it's surprise field trip time 8D

I plan on logging this and it will be a surprise (Toph and earthquakes will be involved). All Toph is telling the students before they go is that they are going on a field trip.

Combat: Toph conducts a more formal martial arts class this week. Teaching them some of the movements involved and different throws. Later she announces that they're going to try weapons and allows everyone to select a weapon of their choice (anything that is generally sharp is replaced with a wooden/plastic replica). She then shows them various ways to use the weapon and asks that students improvise using the weapon in some combination with their power (if that is possible).

Mentor Group: Since we didn't log last week, I'd like to have some sort of log for this week. Any suggestions for things you guys would like to do? I would recommend checking out Toph's recent post in the online comm as well.

Field trip! \o/ Demyx's rock collection isn't very varied, but he actually did it so that's good enough for him.

Re: Earth Science, Combat, Mentor Group
Simon has a quite a few rocks since he does a lot of digging anyways, and they are labeled with little white stickers which have the place that he found them written on them in biro. He is otherwise very quiet and might ask a question or two. When the field trip is mentioned he does get excited though :D

Re: Earth Science, Combat, Mentor Group
Nunnally has a smallish rock collection, which Lelouch helped her collect. Sob her nii had to help her do things :|

Fletcher's rock collection is bigger and includes some rocks he found in Egypt while on Storm's field trip.

They're both smart enough not to label them with "found in the dirt" lol

Re: Earth Science, Combat, Mentor Group
|D I should probably talk to you about Nunnally on the field trip...I kind of feel bad doing to her what I plan on doing on the field trip.

They both get good grades on their rock collection :3

Combat
Giselle likely didn't do too well until it came time to use a wooden replica of her weapon of choice. Though she probably had some moral objections to using her power in conjunction with the weapon because....she'd more or less be hypnotizing someone into throwing down their weapon and letting her hit them. So she may have just brought up what could be done with Toph and expressed a lot of discomfort with actually doing it.

Toph would let her pass anyway...since you know we're supposed to be about non-violence and stuff (or something).

Combat
Mira is all about ranged attacks and isn't so much of a fan of actual hand-to-hand combat. But she grudgingly goes through the motions. When it comes to weapon of choice she is baffled, not really understanding why she would need a weapon when she's got her powers.

Combat
Molly's decent at the throwing thing, after a while. It definitely took some getting used to but doesn't complain too badly.
However when it comes to the weapon choosing, she lights up and goes for the long sword. She wants to be sword(wo)man-like awesome just like daddy.

Re: Combat
Toph's glad she's excited about weapons. Seeing as Molly is probably on the smaller side than, say, the guys, Toph definietly went into detail about using momentum and size against an opponent...which might have helped Molly.

Re: Earth Science
For arriving so recently, Gaara has collected a ridiculously broad selection of rocks which, though piled very unprofessionally into a shoebox Gaara found in the trash, are all extensively labeled with tape and paper. Beyond the required classifications, he has also recorded further research on the makeup of each rock, its durability and whether or not he was able to crush it finely enough to manipulate it as sand. He is disappointed that his other class's trip to Egypt falls right after the rock collection due date, but intends to collect more rocks anyway.

Toph passes you with flying colors and is impressed by your rocks. She does not mind you continuing the collection at all, probably encourages it.

Re: Earth Science, Combat, Mentor Group
YAY EARTHQUAKES AND TECTONIC PLATES! Rictor shines this week. His rock collection is pretty nice too, he bought most of them at the rock store.

Rictor wants a gun. :| I should probably actually put him in firearms huh. He won't know what other weapon to pick.

He likes the hand-to-hand stuff and is fairly decent.

Combat
Riza enjoys the martial arts. Possibly too much. Her dad taught her some basics, but Toph has been helping her along much more than her dad could ever do. The throws are fun.

She pretty much hates using weapons, but settles on a big stick. Bo staff, whatever. It's a big stick. It's difficult to use it in conjunction with her powers, and in fact by the end of weapon day, she's kind of regretting her decision. There's too much space between her and the target.

Combat
Len ends up blowing up a few of the weapon replicas. He'll start with a basic sword, but he's got the hairbrained idea to try to charge the weapon up with energy... and it explodes. Everytime. Yet he's determined somehow his random idea will work.

He tries a staff, some nunchucks, a broadsword (which explodes quite badly and maybe hits some of his classmates nearby).

Earth Science
Russel's rock collection is absolutely impeccable, and he even covers a few other criterion Toph hadn't asked for. Total overachiever.

And he really doesn't like the sound of this field trip. Not at all :

Combat
Shikamaru picks up a broadsword. That if it was made of real metal (instead of wood) would probably be too heavy for him to lift. Which shows an amazing amount of HIM CARING ABOUT CLASS.

He uses the sword to extend the range of his shadow without his shadow being seen until it's too late, so to speak. His picking a long sword entirely based on how it can be used with his powers.

Re: Earth Science, Combat, Mentor Group
Combat: Cessily isn't all that big on weapons, since they can't shapeshift with her. She pays attention though.

Ammy proceeds to get a sword, tie some rope to it, and carry it around on her back/swing it with her teeth in wolf form.

Mentor Group: Larxene suggests something competitive. Preferably with fighting. And logging sounds good to me.

Combat
Harry's not exactly an expert at the whole martial arts thing, being more of a brawler. Whenever he's asked to do anything that requires any sort of flow or coordination he seems pretty awkward, being of the hit them when they aren't looking or kick them in the knee school of combat.

For weapons he grabs a staff, and shows he's been practicing Toph's tips. For the purposes of combining powers he tries using force blasts to enhance his blows (which doesn't work), using force blast and the staff to help propel him in a vault (not too practical and the landing needs work), and finally settles for a short range shotgun force blast followed by the tried and true stick to the face.

Congratulations, Toph. Your Combat class is one of the few classes Bakura doesn't ditch. He's pretty damn gifted at it, too, picking things up quickly (even if he thinks it's weird; he's used to flat-out brawling) considering he's had to fight most of his life, and he chooses a knife as his weapon. He's having some trouble with his invisibility and intangibility in relation to fighting, though, being that he's only ever used it for stealth before.
