GAME UPDATE: October 18th 2009

AT THE XAVIER INSTITUTE:
IT'S SPIRIT WEEK!! A myriad exciting things will be going on all week, presumably, although your friendly neighbourhood mods aren't doing the organising for that – if your character is organising an event, feel free to either plan it in the comments to this post or in posts to [livejournal.com profile] xi_ooc. If not, keep an eye out for other people's updates!

The weather continues on the colder side. It rains on Wednesday and Friday.

NEWS:
On Sunday October 18th (that's today), news reports air of a large, unidentified object that appears to be a spacecraft, observed by several parties to plummet into the Atlantic Ocean. The stretch of ocean it supposedly crashed into is searched – there are signs of severe disruption on the seabed but nothing is actually found.

On Tuesday 20th, a group of three youths are caught graffiti-ing pro-mutant messages on the property of Allen Sherrdit, Harvey Thompson's running mate in the upcoming election. (In, like, two game weeks, guys, omg!) One of them, having previously been using her pyrokinetic abilities to let the group see what they were doing, panics when Sherrdit's security apprehends them and hurls a fireball at one of the guards, who is severely injured – the guards retaliate by shooting. The pyrokinetic mutant, Fiona Mackintosh, 21, is killed – the others, Cody Ziemba, 19, and Saundra Bahe, 24, are unharmed, but are arrested – whether they are mutants is not being publicised.

WHAT WOLVERINE DID THIS WEEK:
Battles the Slow Loris on the edge of a mile-high African cliff. A narrow victory.

OOC NOTICES:
• Applications open this coming Wednesday, December 16th. They'll stay open for a week, until December 23rd. Any app we get before we wake up on December 24th will be valid. On that note, we'd like to remind you about the recent post on character limits. To clarify: staff apps will be open this week, but not next app period. If you have any other questions about limits feel free to IM a mod.

• On a vaguely related note, from this app period onwards, the activity requirement for characters based outside the Institute is going to be lower than the one for those studying or working there. Whilst during an activity check all characters are currently required either to have tagged somewhere during the week before the check or to tag while the check is going on, from now on that will only go for characters at the Xavier Institute – others will only need to have tagged somewhere during the month before the check, and we'll be much more lenient in cases where they haven't depending on the individual character and what they're up to. This isn't to say that non-Institute characters can't be hecka active if you want them to be, but we do recognise that it's not as easy to get activity for a lone villain, for example, or for someone working in a shop in Salem Center, as for a student at Xavier's. This is also to remind you that characters like this are totally allowed and encouraged.

• Speaking of villains, we're starting to get back to people who've emailed us about this (very belatedly in some cases, we're afraid!) but we need some bad guys for a specific plot event in the near future and more can't hurt. Email us at xavierinstitutemods@gmail.com or IM a mod, if you're interested.

• As ever, this post is open for talking about what's going down for classes and mentor groups this week. Now that first-person action logs are permitted as well as prose, we'd encourage people to thread more classes and mentor group activities rather than just handwaving all of them, but if you don't want to do a thread or you want to plan something &c., this is the place!

Woodshop and Mentor Group

[identity profile] supremeweek.livejournal.com 2009-12-12 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
This week, while there are surely some of you slower types who are still working through the basics, those of you who have already caught on to the tools are given a project. Franky is very vague as to what this "project" is, mostly implying that you should try and come up with an idea on your own, and he'll be able to help you through it if you need. He does have ideas for anyone who's too lazy to come up with something on their own--Franky has a rather large collection of blueprints for catapults.

The dancing and poses keep up as much as ever. He's also been stocking up the fridge in the back of class with cola for anyone who needs a break, but he doesn't want to see any of you suckers slacking off, all right?

~~~
Mentor group gets a special treat--a trip to a scrapyard. Try complaining about it, he dares you. If you get off your prissy asses now and again, you'll probably find that a lot of the junk people toss out is useful, or can be made useful with some ingenuity. He's excited about it.
Band, Mentor Group
[identity profile] skull-joke.livejournal.com 2009-12-12 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
For the fifth week of class Brook will be passing out sheet music for one of Mr. Raffles' suggestions, which means that the world now gets to hear the Beatles set to a good half-dozen additional instruments that nature and Lennon and McCartney never intended. At least "Nowhere Man" is a bit more chill than Mötley Crüe, and so probably a bit easier for the less experienced kids to keep up with. Brook very much believes that keeping things at least mostly balanced out like that is important. B|
As a special bonus the class will be having another guest this week - none other than the infamously pantsless Woodshop teacher! Mr. Franky will be randomly dropping in to check on whether this whole thing is the complete disaster he (rightly) suspects it is, and likely making an entrance that will scar all your young and vulnerable retinas for life. Keep an eye out for that thread, if you would, as Brook has no eyes and cannot do so.
This week's average daily puns-per-class: 91
(If anyone wants to do a Band log again, we can probably just continue on the post from last time (http://community.livejournal.com/xi_rpg/84434.html). Just please mark your threads "week five" in addition to the character names and/or "OPEN" so we can keep track, should that ever be important.)
***
Mentor group remains silly and relaxed, with snacks and musical films for all. Yes, even young Mr. Edward, who Brook is only now privately beginning to consider far too serious for his own good. This is not something you want Brook to notice about you, and does not bode well for the future.
We've got one more week change until the week of Halloween, which I believe would be a fine time for our horrible Nightmare Before Christmas mentor group meeting. Slow-logging is of course perfectly fine, since everyone's going to be crazy busy and it's not like we don't know how the log will go if we have to refer to events before we finish it.
MUTANT SPIRIT WEEK + Driver's Ed + Control + Kendo Club + Mentor Group
[identity profile] queenwitha-j.livejournal.com 2009-12-12 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Spirit Week and MUTANT HOMECOMING
Next weekend real time (which is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY early in game) I'll put up Mutant Homecoming. And people can start with their dancing and dates and pretty dresses.
Any and all Spirit Week events should be posted here although I don't think anyone really picked ones to run, the ones I'm just going to say happen are:
- Rock Band and DDR tournament, as well as other video games (IG Monday)
- Sponsored Teacher Danger Room shinnanigans (IG Tuesday)
- Mutant Talent Show (IG Wednesday)
- A very snazzy multicultural dinner for everyone. Where various staff and students cooked foods of various cultures (IG Thusday)
- Charity Pie Event Thingie (IG Friday)
- Mutant Homecoming (IG Friday)
All events ARE Optional, students can avoid them as they see fit. Although it will be hard to avoid the Thursday dinner as its dinner. You can just, I dunno, get pizza.
Driver's Education
Everyone gets to have nice drives through various famous cities in both the US and other countries. Still learning but pretty scenery.
...
Godzilla shows up in Tokyo for this, but does not attack anything.
Control
Mia splits the class up based on your issues with control. She'll do her best to offer advice, but for the most part is leaving the kids to themselves and making sure nobody is hurt.
- Those with issues accessing their powers, they are asked to see how long they can keep their powers active in a constant duration. Mia asks to push yourself as hard as you can, but if you feel like you are goint to faint, stop, take a break, drink some water, etc.
- This with issues keeping their powers in check, they are given a situation where they would want to use their powers, but are told to do what they can to not access them.
- Those who can't seem to control their powers once activated are asked to access their powers, but only the tiniest bit active (light candle, do not torch drapery).
The week will be spent like this. Mia will probably contact other teachers with similar powers to yours if you have trouble.
Kendo Club and Mentor Group
Mia requests all the students interested in a Kendo club to meet at Noon Saturday. Incidentally Mia also requests her Mentor Group to meet in the same spot, at the same time, on Saturday. Hmm.
Flight, Mentor Group
[identity profile] boobwindow.livejournal.com 2009-12-12 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Flight class will be getting graded on their performance in their last lesson, although that thread (http://community.livejournal.com/xi_rpg/96392.html) hasn't even taken off yet, so ... either we finish it swiftly, or you guys tell me what went down in that for your character in this thread and I tell you what PG says about that.
MENTOR GROUP. Firstly, you guys are great for not nominating Peej to get pied, and she tells you so. She also encourages you to vote for the pie-ing of Mr. Stark. <3 Secondly, she wants to make scary movie night a regular thing but hell if she can afford to take you guys out for dinner and to the cinema every week. Take-out and a rental, however, is another matter. Films not called things like THE BLOODENING or RETURN OF THE GOREBEAST or FACE PUNCH are totally okay, but Peej knows her preferences.
Also, Al, get on that kidnapping already.
Spirit week
[personal profile] saintedsinner 2009-12-12 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Though it's not necessarily a cultural thing (especially if it's not roadkill) Ed is more than willing to expose the students to the wonders of properly cooked venison. He's planning to get a LOT of deer this season!
Re: Band, Mentor Group
[identity profile] supremeweek.livejournal.com 2009-12-12 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Franky's entrance is actually not as intense as some of his others, as he wants to catch this class in its 'natural' state. Of course, this won't stop him from being himself while he's there. Franky is bringing his bright pink guitar with him, as well. As much as he expects the class to be awful, a full room of kids paying tribute to a classic like this can in no way stop him from joining in. He's quite good.
Spin is thrilled as ever because BeatlesbeatlesbeatlesLennonMcCartneybeatles eeeee. He's listened to this one enough times in the last couple weeks to even have an idea of what to do at the start of the week. As extremely intimidated Spin is by their visitor, the fact that the guy's good at guitar results in intriguing the kid more than scaring him, soon.
Since Spin is still 'new' at this whole music thing, he's still not sure he should be giving suggestions for further weeks.
I approve of NBC so hard.
Control
[identity profile] listennlearn.livejournal.com 2009-12-12 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Spin has been getting decent at figuring out his Music Sense over the weeks, but he's still extremely frightened by the thought of activating his other set of power. He hasn't activated them since before he came to the school, and would like to keep it that way. He won't even talk about them unless alone with the teacher.
SUBSTITUTES NEEDED: GERMAN, ENERGY PROJECTION, MENTOR GROUP, HOBOS
[personal profile] truepsychictale 2009-12-12 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
And the chorus sings! Last week was Sasha being out of it due to the homecoming/politics/family coming in from town but he was still there making you work.
This time it seems due to crappy luck he has caught...dun dun dun...THE FLU. So, being the little Plague Prince he is at the moment, he is putting substitutes in charge. Here is what is going on for each class.
German
Beginners:
You all get to watch German Sesame Street (Sesamstraße) ALL WEEK. You must write response papers (half a page to a page long, in English) about what happened. This is mostly to improve your listening skills.
Middle:
Because you're more advance you get to watch German Winnie the Pooh (Winnie Puuh) and write a half page to a page response in German.
Advance:
Free time! You all are ahead mostly, so you can either come to class and read or have conversation groups.
Energy Projection
Textbook work. Sorry Guys, you can use this as a study hall unless a teacher who is willing to substitute you all in the Danger Room comes in.
Mentor Group
You all get an apology and a suggestion of things to do together. If you need funding and are willing to brave going to Sasha while he is sick, he'll supply it.
HOBOS!
aka Kill Master
He'll be around, this time he might actually be caught in the medical area! GASP!
Re: Control
[identity profile] queenwitha-j.livejournal.com 2009-12-12 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, Mia will suggest he learn a bit more about his EMOTION LASER because it is not like his power will just go away without thinking about it. She will set it up so he has privacy from his classmates but suggest he learns what triggers his powers to better know how not to trigger them.
She will also suggest he find Houshou, and talk to him if he would like to speak with a teacher that has more experience/understanding of this sort of power.
Re: Spirit week
[identity profile] queenwitha-j.livejournal.com 2009-12-12 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Acceptable to me, and regional food is an aspect of culture. However none of my characters will be doing ANYTHING with this event really. So...
MENTOR GROUP and I.R.
[identity profile] righteousapollo.livejournal.com 2009-12-12 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
This week Enjolras is sporting a rather fetching black eye, courtesy of an over-zealous police officer from last week's riots. Feel free to rib him for that.
MENTOR GROUP
You guys are awesome. Enjolras is proud of you lot. This will manifest itself in lots of manly shoulder pats and the occassional grimly pleased nod. The reason he's only grimly pleased is due to the fact that he's too proud to take his name out of the pie ballot, figuring that he should set a good example to the student body or something like that. Yeah.
There may be some other kind of get together - some kind of social thing - let me know if you guys want this to happen or what.
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
This week's discussion topic: can universal international law (and the policing that goes with it) ever be achieved? Enjolras will probably lecture a bit for this (here, have a wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_law) page!) 'cause he's all about law study, but there's still plenty of room for arguing.
Also, if any characters have anything of importance that they want to discuss next week let Enjolras know because he wants next week to be up to you guys.
Re: Control
[identity profile] listennlearn.livejournal.com 2009-12-12 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
He does that thing where he pretends to be thankful for the advice and take it to heart, but really just gets disappointed because there really should be a way to get rid of it or something.
If that's the case, then deer roast with beer????
Re: Spirit week
[identity profile] queenwitha-j.livejournal.com 2009-12-12 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It is safe to say with absolute certainty that no you cannot have beer.
Not in direct view of the staff, and certainly not advertised openly.
Assume Logan is at this, he will smell you have beer, and be mad if you didn't get him any. (This statement is a joke, unless Logan-mun says it is truth)
Civics
[identity profile] no-youmove.livejournal.com 2009-12-12 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
HEY GUYS
You get to read the Constitution and Bill of Rights and discuss them in class, and then your homework is to write a short essay summarising them.
MR ROGERS REALLY CARES ABOUT THIS I HOPE YOU'RE ALL AT LEAST INTERESTED
FLYING SQUAD
[identity profile] firstlaugh.livejournal.com 2009-12-12 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm going to try and finish the flight class log here (http://community.livejournal.com/xi_rpg/96392.html?thread=3494536#t3494536), if anyone else wants to join in.
GEOGRAPHY and MENTOR GROUP
[identity profile] kidcap.livejournal.com 2009-12-12 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Geography
THIS WEEK WE'RE DISCUSSING ATLANTIS.
This also gets a little bit into mutant history as Namor is considered to be one of the first known mutants. The relations between various Atlantean royals (ie - Aqua Man and the Namor clan) will most likely be discussed. Same goes for Atlanteans and surface dwellers coexisting.
Mentor Group
WE'RE GOING TO THE CIRCUS
Pietro will be overly enthusiastic about the acrobats. He very much admires their grace. You can make of that what you will.
Post-show, expect to be treated to sweets at a cozy little coffee shop in the West Village.
He also expects all of you to give soeone else money to get pied in the face. It is a personal betrayal if you do not, charity be damned. :|
[identity profile] kidcap.livejournal.com 2009-12-12 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
AW MAN STEVE THAT IS COOL
BUCKY'S LIKE, SUPER INTO THIS CLASS YOU HAVE NO IDEA
Velma is a perfect student about Geography, blahblahblah. Lots and lots of notes about Atlantis.
However, when it comes to the circus, she is very bored. And desperately looking for a mystery to pop up and brighten her day.
Velma will put her money on Soifon getting pie'd. If that helps.
