FAQ

Do I have to know a lot about X-Men/the Marvel Universe to play in this game?
If it's something you can't glean from reading the game info, then you probably don't need to know it. :Db If we've overestimated how easy this is to understand with no X-Men/Marvel knowledge, though, and there's something that's still baffling you? Go ahead and ask. We don't bite.

How many characters can I have?
Nine! Nine per player. They can even all be from the same series if you want, though we'd rather you didn't do that.

Is there a game chat?
Indeed there is. If you're on AIM, you can head over to xichat mutantparty (it's normally xichat, but AIM has a tendency to randomly stop our rooms from working for a week or two and when this happens we usually lurk in mutanthighschool or makeoutrp or mutantparty where we currently are!) and we will welcome you with open arms. Chat participation isn't essential but it's worth it if you like that sort of thing – a lot of folks like getting to know their fellow players, and it can be a good place to ask for threads and talk about plot. There's often a mod or two or three in there, too, who will a) happily help you out if you need any help with anything and b) kick your ass if you link to anything not worksafe without warning. See the rules for more on chatiquette.

I don't have AIM but I want to participate in the chat; what can I do?
Well, for starters you could get AIM or one of the many other clients that support it; if you don't want to download anything you can try meebo, which allows you to use AIM in a browser window. Handy!

Can I join chat if I'm not in the game already?
If you're planning on joining, or if you're thinking about it and want to see what we're like, feel free to pop in! You can also pose questions to [livejournal.com profile] mutantprom before actually joining.

What's with the whole MUTANT PROM thing?
MUTANT HIGH SCHOOL. MUTANT FIELD DAY. MUTANT PROM!!!

What's all this GMT stuff?
Like half the mods are British, so we live in Britishtime. It's this bad habit we have. For your reference, EST is GMT-5. Now you know!

So I heard you have a wiki.
We do. You can find it at xiwiki.pbworks.com, and it can be a bit intimidating, but your best first stop is the Newbie Guide to XIWiki. It contains a lot of useful information like the lists of staff and classes at the Xavier Institute, which we encourage players to help keep updated, as well as pages on NPCs, locations, and an asspile of injokes. Also more lists than is probably reasonable, although some of them are quite useful.

So does the game take place in the Marvel Universe?
This RP takes place in an AU which resembles Earth-616, the main Marvel Universe, in a lot of ways, but differs quite dramatically in others, in order to have the game work the way we want it to. Essentially, outside of the X-Men, all American superhero activity has been simplified: the Avengers, for instance, were established about two years ago and their roster is still Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man, the Wasp and Captain America; the Fantastic Four have been around for as long as the X-Men but their exploits have been toned down somewhat. Spider-Man has only been headline news in the Daily Bugle for the last two years.
The X-Men have had a variety of adventures and a variety of different teams; the original team of five young mutants was assembled ten years ago and it has gone through a lot of different members and a lot of different adventures since then. For a better idea of in-game history, check the timeline.

So what are those adventures?
We like to try to keep it vague and simple for the sake of people who want to app staff characters who've been members of the X-Men in the past. If you are playing a character who used to be a member of the X-Men, feel free to decide on past adventures amongst yourself with other players. Or just make shit up on the fly, especially if it's Silver Age-style nonsense. Especially especially if you're playing Wolverine.

If it's not Earth-616, what is it?
Earth-21561926, of course.

Are there any other mutant schools?
No. This is the only one. :I

Has the Xavier Institute always been a school?
Until it was rebuilt in 2009, the mansion did not have classrooms, dormitories, or any other of the school facilities it now boasts. Although there were often youngsters in residence and they often received schooling whilst at the mansion, it was often directly from Xavier or older members of the X-Men; there were no teaching staff and there were never more than five or so students at any one time.

This is the way something is in Marvel canon so it should be this way in your game, too!
Nope. The game is AU. Yeah, we take a lot of our cues from Marvel canon, obviously, but if we say something is a certain way in the game then that is how it is, regardless of whether that contradicts canon. If you know more about Earth-616 than us? Great, good for you. This isn't Earth-616.

Can I break the fourth wall?
You can't have your character recognise another character from fiction, no.
Obviously your characters are going to want to reference things now and then. That's fine – as long as what they're referencing doesn't involve a character we already have in the game. If it's a canon so far unrepresented, though, go ahead – but be prepared to pretend it never happened if someone apps a character from that series. We advise the use of poorly-disguised analogues or parodies of real-life books, comics, TV shows or video games in situations where directly referencing the real thing would be problematic.

Also, bear in mind that in this universe you can actually buy comics about the more public heroes (notably the Fantastic Four and Avengers).

Obviously none of this applies if you are playing Deadpool.

Why the politics? Aren't you worried about being biased?
Politics are a fairly important part of some of this game's plot and background, and we want to keep things fairly realistic in that area. As such, no political party is being portrayed as the 'good guys'; they're politicians, none of them are lovely people, they all make mistakes, and their actions in no way reflect the mods' opinions of individual people's political views, which we recognise vary drastically from person to person regardless of political affiliation. In-game politics will almost exclusively deal with mutant rights, and, while this will inevitably mirror some real-life social issues, we're much more interested in criticising prejudice from all political positions than in lauding any political party as the unicorn-riding bringers of sparkles and gorgeousness.

I want my character to be attending a class that you haven't mentioned/isn't listed with a teacher, what do I do?
Just say they attend it. We won't mind.

How many classes should my character be taking?
Really? As many as you like. Eight is an okay number? It's okay if you have more or less or only name a few and assume they're in some others. We have a pretty lax approach to classes and won't actually care if you change your mind about which ones your character is in every other week.

How do they afford all this?
The combined power of Professor X himself being pretty well-off and the school having a number of wealthy benefactors pays for most of the running of the school, as well as the education of a lot of the students. Students with no source of income (unsurprisingly, we are up to our necks in orphans and kids whose families have abandoned them) are provided with a moderate weekly allowance.

The mansion's technology is unfeasibly advanced, how are you explaining that?
I ...

... The Danger Room is cool, okay. Do you want us to not have the Danger Room or something? Geez.

Does my character have to have a codename?
For the most part, the only characters who'll have codenames from the start will those with a past in superheroics. Students may well be assigned codenames later on, though, so you might want to start thinking about it.

Does my character have to be the same age as they are in canon?
Nope. Generally speaking it makes most sense to make a character who's canonically a teenager a student, or one who's canonically an adult a staff member, but really we don't mind if people want to do it the other way round now and then. If we don't think it works we'll tell you, but if you can give us a believable characterisation, go for it.

Can my character be the oldest/toughest/strongest/most powerful ...?
Probably not. For the most part our measuring-sticks are in-universe characters – either NPCs, or played by people we trust. For example, we will generally discourage people from making their character:
- Older than Wolverine.
- A better engineer than Tony Stark.
- A more powerful telepath than Emma Frost.
- Stronger than the Hulk.
- More physically capable without super-powers than Captain America.
- More intelligent than Reed Richards.
- A more powerful sorcerer than Albus Dumbledore.
There are a few reasons for these limitations but mostly it's to do with not wanting the masses of characters from over-the-top shonen manga series to distort the power levels of the universe where this is set, and not wanting some of the people in charge of the school to be outdone by uppity kids.

Depending on who the character is, they may be allowed to be as good as some of these guys, but not better.

I have a question that isn't answered here!
Leave a comment about it here and we'll get back to you as soon as we can – that way the answer will be there for other people to see. Alternatively, you can contact the mod email at xavierinstitutemods@gmail.com, or IM one of us individually. If you're uncertain at all about whether anything is allowed, we'd much rather you ask us than assume the answer is no!

1: I'm trying to hold faithful to what little canon backstory my character has, so if I may ask: when you say "over the top," where is the top, precisely?

2: This is 2009, yeah? READING COMPREHENSION HURR DURR

1. The top is very high indeed, considering we have an alien space-dragon from the 19th century. Really though, it's best if their backstory doesn't involve anything like MASSIVE VICTORIES OVER SUPERVILLAINS. Say, Magneto or Doctor Doom. As long as your character isn't stealing the show with their past exploits, you should be golden.

2. YES WELL DONE. :Db

So, I want to app a character who was married to an Inhuman. Do they exist in this AU? It's probably worth noting that Crystal and her sister were both members of the FF for a while and I know they're around.

Also, while we're on the subject of nonhuman/nonmutant Marvel life. Atlanteans? Are they around at all?

Thanks!

Both Inhumans and Atlanteans are indeed lurking around this version of the Marvel Universe, so feel free to pepper your apps with them if you need to :Db

Question timez~~

Since this is all technically an AU... would you guys allow a character whose canon has not actually been released to the public yet save for trailers and vague information? We've gotten glimpses of the character in question, both the overall story of their canon and their personality. So there's enough information for me to put that IS canon, but then I'd expand on it with my own ideas/theories/interpretations that may NOT be close to canon. But hence the AU part! [The character is from Final Fantasy XIII. You probably need to know that.]

Uh. I hope that made sense. Second question is, if I can apply above character, may I just make up a "real name" for them since the name they use in their canon is already a code name?

Thanks for your time. :3

Yo!

Any chance you could hold off til the game's actually out? This being an AU game doesn't make any difference as far as that goes XD Feel free to app the character when the game has been released, but until then that's gonna be a no. Sorry!

If we're planning to app a non-squishy/organic, like an android or a robot, do they have to be fully human for this, or can they be allowed a few robot parts/powers they've had in canon? (thinking of someone from Chobits, just to make things a little more clear)

Any powers are okay for a human character as long as they're mutant powers. Robot limbs/cyborg stuff are okay for characters who have reasons for it in their backstory. If you want them to have been created recently rather than born, they can totes be a clone or a laboratory experiment or something. If you want, though, you can actually app the character as a robot (especially if they're staff, but it's not out of the question for students), as long as you can make the backstory and their being at the Institute work for this AU.

Pura gives you bonus awesome points for using the word squeeze
Joint histories are encouraged! Specially if they are like that in canon.

As long as you talk to the other apper and sort things out and make it work it should be entirely fine :)

here goeees
Question one! Is it okay for characters to have extensive non-mutant but still superhuman powers? I'm apping DC's Cass Cain and in canon she has a way-beyond-human ability to read people's body language. Plus being a highly-trained martial artist and assassin. I thought of making the body language-reading her mutant power, but that messes up the bits of her history I'm lifting from canon (she was brought up without verbal language by an assassin father who trained her intensively so that the parts of her brain that would normally deal with speech were effectively taught body language instead). So...abilities that are non-mutant powers? I guess I'm just worried that she'll be over-powered, so just making sure where the limit is.

Question two! Cass can't really talk. She talks in short, broken sentences. And she can't really read and write! (And will need remedial classes, probably.) Will this interfere with gameplay? It should be fine if I rely on voice/video/picture posts, right?

/tldr (:

Question one! That is fine!

Question two! That is also fine!

She's definitely not going to be the only highly-trained warrior/assassin in the student body, and she won't be the only one who can't use the online stuff in a conventional way, either. It's not necessary for any character to use the intertubes at all if it's IC, and voice/video posts and pictures are totes acceptable. The body language thing is also fine! :D

What are you thinking of giving her by way of actual mutant powers? /nosy

Hey, hi: two questions!

One: Did you ever get the email I sent you regarding my Remy LeBeau application? I just want to double check, since I sent it out over my iPhone.

And two: I want to app two characters that basically can't/won't survive without the other being in game with them, and would like to use the same journal -- with different icons, of course -- for the both of them. Is this possible? (They're Ukon and Sakon from the series Naruto.)

I was wondering, I was to app Alex aka Phobos aka Ares' (from Dark Avengers) son. Being that he is Ares' son, he's sort of like a demi-god, I was wondering if I would be able to keep as such or would I have to make it so that he is a mutant. I want to be able to keep him as his father's son because, well, it would make some sense but not absolutely necessary. Uh, yeahh. Thank you C:

Also, if ever wanted to app a character like Noh-Varr (kree-cockroach weapon) I would have to completely redo his background, right?

While we're not totally opposed to characters having ... unusual origins, the main question here would be what he'd be doing at the Institute if he wasn't a mutant. We're completely open to working something out if you got something, though.

As for Noh-Varr ... yeah he'd probably require some AUing to be at the Institute. If you wanted a hand with that, though, we'd totally be willing to help.

Really needs an edit function
So, I read the whole "pet" paragraph in the FAQ, and I was wondering how this would affect Kiba from Naruto exactly, considering his whole canon? Would he still be allowed to bring/work with Akamaru at the institute, somehow, as an extension of his mutant powers or something? Considering how Akamaru doesn't have a sentient-type personality (like, say, Digimon), I don't think anyone would/could really app him, but I thought I'd check and make sure things were all right first. ...And before I write any of his AU canon.

Buut, either way, thought I'd get things straightened out first.

Question on activity! Is a player still considered active if they're replying a lot to other people's posts, but not making many of their own? While I can write Giselle in third person just fine, in first person journal style, it is a lot easier for me to have her replying to others than writing her own journal posts. Not sure why. I'm debating on apping as Rikku here and I have three questions, just so I know what's okay.

I was curious how her whole pickpocketing thing would be taken. She wouldn't steal anything big or valuable, just pencils, pens, homework of people she doesn't like, that sort of thing.

Is it okay to give her something like technopathy (controlling machinery/able to create the stuff with her mind out of parts)?

And is it okay if she's agile and quick without being a mutant? Picking pockets tends to lead to lots of chases XD

/also a mod, how convenient
Technopathy is all good. Yuffie's exactly the same thieving-wise, if a little more shameless about it, but her mutation is being able to superspeed up to a range of a few metres (so it's really kind of useless in most situation) - characters don't have to rely on their mutation for their main strengths, so don't worry. Hello! I was thinking of apping River Tam from Firefly so I just wanted to ask about her backstory, because in canon she's basically an escaped laboratory experiment but she's also crazy. Would the Institute have taken her in despite being unstable and very dangerous? And would they have intervened to help her escape? In canon her brother rescued her but since he isn't here right now...well. It isn't likely she'd be able to get away by herself.

You can arrange to have a specific group or hero rescue her, or just assume she was. Xavier would want her to live at the Institute - it is there to shelter mutant children. She would probably be assigned help from one or more of the experienced staff, and whether she actually took classes would be up to you.

But yes, essentially. If you would like to discuss her backstory in detail, or work anything else out, feel free to contact us via AIM!

Um. Okay, so, I sent in an application the other day. In it I went into a lot of junk about South Korean mutant politics, and mostly it was me trying to make the character's canon fit in to the AU.

And now, I realize I probably should have asked you guys first. And that I also would do it differently and a lot more vaguely if I did it now. In case someone else from his semi-obscure canon should happen to app, and it's not like it would affect him much, anyway.

So.

1. How much do you hate me right now?
2. What should I do about this?

So, I don't know how familiar you are with Heroes, but Sylar is the ~*big bad*~ (on and off because Tim Kring can't make up his mind). He cuts open people's skulls so he can fondle their brains and steal their powers. Hot, right? Anyway. I was wondering mostly about your ~*character death*~ policy because Xavier's school would basically be like ... the Pokemon Safari Zone for Sylar, not gonna lie. He's very good at playing pretend and not getting caught.

Alternatively, Sylar's pretty much a jack-of-all-trades because of his original ability (intuitive aptitude) making him able to see how other people's abilities work and change his DNA so he can use them, and I figured it would be a good idea to make sure that his powers wouldn't have to be taken away, since he'd pretty much ... have a conniption if they were, but if they're not, he's ... for all intents and purposes, physically invincible. ♥

Yeah no character death. Also no Sylars.

Lmao um I am being silly but actually this really is not the game for Sylars. We've had one app for him and have basically come to the conclusion that the only way to have him fit in this AU would be to REALLY rework his entire character. Here's what I told our other Sylar apper:

The main thing is with the character himself; Sylar just really isn't a good fit for this game at this stage. He's a villain, a murderer, very dangerous, etc etc. Right now the app options are basically for a staff member (hecka out for him), someone around town (which... doesn't really give him a connection), or a student.

Apping him as a student makes it a LITTLE more likely that Xavier would ignore his past, but not enough. While Prof X often takes in troubled kids, there's absolutely no way he would allow Sylar, a murderer, to run around his school unchecked, putting his other students and staff members in danger. He can't be at the institute full stop if there's any danger of him seriously hurting the students or staff members. And Prof X and Emma Frost are this universe's most powerful telepaths, so uh, they will not be easily fooled. Also we're pretty much setting the invincible bar at levels like "Wolverine/Powergirl/Emma/Deadpool/etc", because otherwise people from other canons would be kicking the staff's asses up and down all the time.

Your options are basically this: AU him more and make him less dangerous and a LOT less powerful, wait until the game reaches a point at which we're accepting apps for villain characters, or app someone else entirely. Sorry!

This is probably stated someplace already and I just didn't see it, but what's the policy on re-using character journals? Is all game activity posted on the comm or does the game use friends lists to see entries?
(Reply) (Thread) (Link)
[identity profile] xi-mods.livejournal.com on December 6th, 2009 12:01 pm (UTC)
The game is mostly community based, with all the journal entries going to one comm and all the logs going to another. People use the actual journals mostly for posting up 'cell phone' posts, posting their CR entries and displaying their apps which is a requirement of the rp. There are a few people already who have reused character journals so we're fine with this as long as you can keep track of everything!

H-hi. I hope it is okay to post here and I know apps are closed and everything but I am thinking about joining and I'm not sure about a few things. First of all I have never played an AU before and I'm a little...unsure how to get from canon backstory to AU backstory without doing anything stupid or implausible.

Secondly, could I maybe get a basic rundown of how game mechanics works? I have only played in a journal-based game before, of the "your-character-is-suddenly-pulled-into-another-world-have-fun" variety. Comm-bassed high school AU, not so much.

BASICALLY I NEED SOMEONE TO HOLD MY HAND THROUGH THIS BECAUSE I AM INSECURE AAAAAHHH.

Hey no problem! /puts on modhat!

You need a hand holding? We have so many hands for serious. Like at least ten. We're totally used to talking people through AU stuff and don't mind helping people out with it at all! Do you have AIM?

As for game mechanics, I think this is mostly detailed in the rules, but it's basically a case of anything like a journal post, notice, &c. goes in [livejournal.com profile] xi_online (you can take a look at it for examples) and anything that actually happens in meatspace (or the psychic plane, I guess, considering this game) goes in [livejournal.com profile] xi_rpg. If that's any help? 8D

This might... uhmmm sound a whee bit dumb, and it's really not important in the long run, but lately-- just call me Neurotica.

If a character's ability was to phase into an 'alternate dimension' (either turning into this odd jellyfish-y blue/purple/pink vaguely transparent version of herself or disappearing from view altogether), mainly used for stealth and sneak asplosions and keeping in mind that she can keep track of the goings-on around her perfectly well, what would it be classified under? Convoluted, so sorry

Snooped around the wiki a little and glanced at the character list organized by power, which is why I asked.

On another note, what are your thoughts on a character who develops their power through an incident involving hostile extraterrestrials? Justifiably hostile in this case. Campers were being douches. Permissible?
(the character in mind is Lilith from Borderlands, and while she has a set personality, there's not anything about where she came from and the only hint as to how she got her powers was "touched by alien technology". Had to improvise!)

I didn't see this anywhere so I thought I'd ask...

What's the upper age limit for students? Would someone in their early twenties who'd just developed powers/found out about the school be accepted into classes and stuff?
(Reply) (Thread) (Link)
[identity profile] xi-mods.livejournal.com on December 13th, 2009 12:05 pm (UTC)
A lot of the classes are to ensure the students get a proper education. Someone in their early twenties would presumably already have attended another school, and therefore would not be required to take any of the standard classes.

Adults can be brought in to stay at the Institute whilst they discover their powers, but they're more likely to receive personal tutoring than be placed in any of the classes with the teenagers - generally mutants' powers become active during puberty (or earlier, if exposed to trauma or the like), so there aren't too many 'new' mutants over the age of eighteen.

Hey, I've been thinking about apping this fellow here (Hei from Darker than Black) once apps open back up. In canon, he's constantly undercover (I mean, CONSTANTLY) as dorky, hapless, and thoroughly innocuous Li Shen-Shung, in the guise of which he takes odd jobs, which position him to perform his real job, ie Chinese Electric Batman For Hire. Typically, his job as Chinese Electric Batman involves breaking into secured facilities and retrieving something or someone valuable. Or destroying something or killing someone. You know how it goes.

At any rate, what I was thinking for adapting that is that he could get himself hired as Li as a seemingly-normal human janitor or some other menial job, to get himself inside the Institute, from where he would be trying to covertly accomplish...something. Most likely either trying to thieve some of Xavier's technology (lol Danger Room) or some of the Institutes records for his employer.

1) Would this be acceptable?

2) Do you have any suggestions for his employer/what he's looking for? I mean, I can work something out myself, but you're the ones most intimately aware of what the options are within your game.

3) I'm well aware that he will inevitably be rumbled. It might take a while, since he'd have planned ahead and used countermeasures against, for example, Wolverine's sense of smell and all those pesky telepaths, sooner or later he'll be found out. Since he won't have killed anybody, would it be acceptable for him to wind up on the teaching staff once the whole school tracks him down and sits on him? That sort of thing happens in the comics all the time.
